Making
prints with Black Boarders: Specific Masks: These
can be cut out of black stiff cardboard to almost any shape and
laid in the paper when the exposure is made. As the light
only projects through the opening a corresponding image shape is
printed onto the paper. Circles and ovals work particularly well,
and a good trick is to raid the scraps of a local picture framer
and mat cutter. Size and align the image to fit the opening in the
mat.
For the Codes of Survival Project I made a very specific mask that had three pieces and allowed me to align the image in the centre keep a white boarder around the image and then print the photogram. Different parts of the mask was used for each component of the print.
