This
is a catalogue of bromeliads used by Lloyd godman for his various installations
and photosynthesis projects - the collection of pants he accessed in
New Zealand from 1996 - 2004 was collected from a wide range of sources,
while most were brought from Greens Bromeliads, some were also donated
by the Dunedin Botanical Gardens. Later in 2004 these plants were either
sold or given away with his move to Australia.
Lloyd is at present re-establishing his collection where he now lives
in Melbourne.

Because
of the stiff, brightly coloured inflorescence on an erect spike,
Vrieseas, are known as the flaming sword plants of the jungle. They
have softer leaves than many other bromeliads which are often boldly
banded with red on green. Although tit is often said they need more exacting conditions than most
other bromeliads and prefer warmer conditions ( 19-27 degrees C, 65-80
degrees F), moderate to low light and a moist atmosphere, I have found many are actually quite hardy and can tolerate temperatures down to 5 degrees C for sometime. Many can also be adapted to grow ion trees as epiphytes.
Plants are marked NZ for those collected in New Zealand - or Aust - for the new plants collected since coming to Australia

This plant has soft, metallic, green leaves about 1ft long and forms a medium sized rosette. These leaves are concave on the upper surface and have a down turned pinched appearance at the tips. The fat but flattened inflorescence is large and heavy, causing it to lean out of the vase like a bright gold fish and is about 9 -12" long and about 2 1/2 " wide. It is red in the centre and changes to yellow towards the outside. |
