How does aperture affect depth of field?

In this image, shot through a fence of the side of a building, the use of an aperture setting of f27 has produced enough depth of field to show the side of the building in sharp focus and the strands of wire in the fence. Notice how the wire in the foreground becomes progressively unsharp and out of focus.

In this image, the use of an aperture setting of f4 has produced a much more limited depth of field. Notice how the wire in the foreground is so out of focus it begins to visually disappear.

Two other factors play a part in depth of field:
subject distance
focal length
