Specific Syntax

There are other aspects of image syntax that might only be specific to a certain process or technique. For instance, if we look at the edge of the camera frame:

* Printing an image with a black boarder not only defines the full image frame but the format of the camera used, 35mm, 120 or 4x5. In some cases, like with Hasselblad, the marks around the outside of the frame even defines the make of the camera used.

* sheet film has a notch pattern that identifies the type of film used and this is often printed as a part of the image.

* Polaroid type 55 film leaves a distinctive edge around the out side of the print.

* Alternative processes where the emulsion has been painted onto a paper base might reference this application.
